Analog TV is past its sell-by date

Vintage console TV. (Gustavo Bueso Padgett)Should you still buy an analog TV? Stores are marking them down and clearing them out, making way for more digital televisions. The DTV transition will wrap up on February 17, 2009, and if you want a “classic-style” TV, this may be your last chance.

Let me say this upfront: I’ll pass on this deal. The value proposition of an obsolete TV set just doesn’t move me.

Mobile TV signals—and vendors—blanket Las Vegas

Competing mobile TV technologies are elbowing for the stage at the National Association of Broadcasters show this week in Las Vegas.

Qualcomm gets the award for showmanship, as they’ve blanketed Vegas with FLO coverage—16 channels of video, audio content and datacast transmissions.

But the DVB-H camp is well fortified:

…new to the scene is Sony Ericsson (News - Alert), which on Monday announced it has joined the Mobile DTV Alliance, the North America group representing DVB-H members. The handset maker joins a formidable list of sponsors including Intel ( News - Alert), Microsoft, Motorola (News - Alert), Nokia (News - Alert), Texas Instruments and Modeo, the division of Crown Castle International that plans to officially launch commercial-grade multicast mobile broadcast in New York City and select major U.S. markets in 2006 and in the top 30 U.S. markets throughout 2007.
